Professor Peter Jackson
Professor Peter Jackson is known for his ground-breaking work on public sector economics and strategies. He is also known for establishing the Department of Management and the distance learning programme.
What is little known is his ability to create impactful personal relationships with his mentees, PhD students and colleagues. And I am sure many of us would agree with me.
Professor Peter Jackson was my mentor since I joined Leicester in 2012. Over the years we became great friends who stood beside me in the darkest and happiest times of my life.
Over many cups of tea and lunches, he had shared perhaps hundreds of stories of inspirational academics and practitioners to inspire me and to pursue my dream of becoming an impactful academic. His kind and encouraging words gave me the confidence to launch the Avoidable Deaths Network (ADN), which has now become a global network dedicated to finding theoretical and practical solutions to reducing avoidable disaster deaths.
To commemorate his remarkable legacy of influential mentoring and nurturing not just me but many other global leaders at Leicester and beyond, ADN launched a ‘Professor Peter Jackson Annual Lecture’ on 13 March at the launch event of the Global Campaign ‘International Awareness Day for Avoidable Deaths’ in the city of Izumiotsu in Japan.
The world needs influential mentors like Professor Peter Jackson. Therefore, the aim of this Annual Lecture is to value the mentor and mentee relationships and the potential impact they may have on creating future leaders for sustainable development.
I miss Professor Peter Jackson every day and perhaps I always will.
His vision, values and ideals will continue to shape my career and ADN. For this, I will always be grateful to Professor Peter Jackson.Written by Professor Nibedita S. Ray-Bennett
